Journey 8: The Pit, the Place, and the Prison
Faithful When You Cannot See What God Is Doing
🧭 Journey at a Glance
📖 Big Idea Joseph could not control the pit, the accusation, the prison, or the timing. In every place, he could choose whether he would remain faithful to God.
✨ Key Truth God’s presence is not proven by favorable circumstances.
💎 Core Scripture Genesis 39:21 KJV
🗺️ This Journey Pastor Ed follows Joseph through the pit, the place of accusation, and the prison of the forgotten on the way toward the fulfillment of the dream God had given him. Joseph lived those chapters without knowing how they would end. This Journey returns to the Word and asks a deeper discipleship question: How do I remain faithful to God while I cannot yet see what He is doing?
You do not have to know the ending in order to be faithful in the middle.

Pastor Ed emphasizes that the pit, the place, and the prison did not have the final word in Joseph’s story.
💭 Personal Reflection
Have you ever experienced a season in which your circumstances seemed inconsistent with what you believed God was doing?
When you cannot see what God is doing, what is hardest for you to trust: His presence, His timing, His goodness, or His purpose? Why?

What was taken from Joseph?
What decisions were made for him?
What could Joseph control in this part of the story?
What could he not control?
What is the first thing Scripture tells us once Joseph arrives in Egypt?
“And the LORD was with Joseph...” Genesis 39:2 KJV
📖 Presence in the Descent
Joseph’s circumstances did not look like evidence of God’s presence. He had been rejected by his brothers, stripped of the coat his father gave him, thrown into a pit, sold, and carried into a foreign land.
Yet Genesis does not begin Joseph’s life in Egypt by explaining the plan. It tells us something more important: the LORD was with Joseph.
We often want God’s presence to mean that the hard thing will not happen. Joseph’s story challenges that assumption. None of those hard things meant God had left him.
💎 A hard place is not proof of an absent God.
✍️ Sit With It
Where have you been tempted to use your circumstances as evidence that God is absent?
What does Joseph’s story challenge you to reconsider about that conclusion?
If your circumstances did not change today, what would it mean to believe that God is still present?

🛡️ Movement II - The Place of Accusation
Faithfulness Under Pressure
🎧 SCRIPTURE MOVEMENT II The Place of Accusation Genesis 39:2-5, 7-9, 11-12, 16-20 KJV

What had Potiphar entrusted to Joseph?
What did Potiphar’s wife ask Joseph to do?
What reason did Joseph give for refusing her?
What did Joseph actually do when the pressure intensified?
“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9 KJV
📖 Integrity Is About God
Joseph did not frame the decision around whether he might get caught. He framed it around God. His integrity was not rooted in reputation. It was rooted in relationship.
Faithfulness is choosing what honors God even when compromise could appear easier. And Scripture gives us the uncomfortable part: Joseph refuses sin, flees, does the right thing - and is still falsely accused and imprisoned.
✦ Obedience is not a transaction with God. We do not obey so that God owes us a better outcome. We obey because He is God.
✍️ Sit With It
Have you ever assumed that doing the right thing should make the outcome easier?
What happens to your faith when obedience costs you instead?
If obedience brought no immediate reward, would God still be worthy of it?
Where are you currently tempted to measure faithfulness by the outcome instead of by whether it honors God?

🔑 Movement III - The Prison of the Forgotten
Faithfulness in the Waiting
🎧 SCRIPTURE MOVEMENT III The Prison of the Forgotten Genesis 39:21-23; 40:5-8, 14-15, 23 KJV
“But the LORD was with Joseph...” Genesis 39:21 KJV
📖 Faithful Does Not Mean Unaffected
Joseph trusted God. Joseph also wanted the prison door opened. Those truths are not in conflict.
Wanting a hard circumstance to change is not the same thing as refusing to trust God in it. Faithfulness does not require us to call the prison comfortable. It means continuing to honor God while we are still asking Him to open the door.
💎 Being forgotten by people is not the same as being forgotten by God.

Have you ever felt pressure to act as though a difficult season did not hurt because you thought that was what “having faith” should look like?

🚪 Movement IV - The Waiting / The Turning Point
When the Door Opens
🎧 SCRIPTURE MOVEMENT IV The Waiting / The Turning Point Genesis 41:1, 14-16, 25, 28-32 KJV
“And it came to pass at the end of two full years...” Genesis 41:1 KJV
📖 The Public Moment Reveals the Hidden Formation
Joseph has waited. He has served in obscurity. He has been overlooked. Then suddenly the door opens.
But Joseph does not step into Pharaoh’s presence acting as though the moment belongs to him. He points to God. The public moment does not create Joseph’s character. It reveals it.
✦ Hidden faithfulness becomes visible character.
✍️ Sit With It
What has waiting revealed about who you are becoming?
If the door you have been waiting on opened tomorrow, what would already be true about your character because of how you have lived in the waiting?
What might God be forming in you now that still matters even if the door never opens the way you expect?
When opportunity comes, will your first instinct be to prove yourself - or to point back to God?
The waiting did not make God present. It revealed that He had been present all along.

What Joseph Could Not Control
Look for Joseph’s Response
What Does Scripture Reveal About God?
The Pit Gen. 37:23-24, 28; 39:2
His brothers rejected him, stripped him, sold him, and carried him away from home.
After everything has been taken from Joseph, what is the first truth Genesis 39 tells you about his new life in Egypt?
Starter: “The LORD was with Joseph.” What does that tell you about God's presence and Joseph's circumstances?
The Place of Accusation Gen. 39:2-20
Joseph could not control Potiphar's wife, her advances, her accusation, or Potiphar's response.
Why does Joseph refuse her? What does he actually do when temptation becomes physical?
Does God's presence keep Joseph from being falsely accused? What does that challenge you to believe about obedience and circumstances?
The Prison of the Forgotten Gen. 39:21-23; 40
Joseph could not control his imprisonment or whether the butler remembered him.
What does Joseph continue doing in prison? Who does he notice? Who does he credit for interpretation?
Find the repeated language from Genesis 39. What has changed? What has not changed?
The Waiting / Turning Point Gen. 41:1, 14-32
Joseph could not control how long he waited or when Pharaoh would call.
When the door finally opens, who does Joseph point to first? What does that reveal about the man who came out of the waiting?
What does Joseph say God has revealed or established? Where is God's activity evident in the passage?
The Long View Gen. 45:4-8; 50:20
Joseph could not undo what his brothers had done to him.
How does Joseph describe what happened without denying the evil that was done?
What had God been doing that Joseph could not have fully seen from the pit or prison?
🔎 Step Back and Look at the Whole Story
What remained consistent about Joseph even though his circumstances changed?
What remained consistent about God?
Where do you see Joseph changing or maturing?

🪞 When the Middle Tries to Interpret God
An unfinished movement can become a loud voice. Bring that interpretation back under the authority of God’s Word.
THE CIRCUMSTANCE SAYS“If God were with me, I wouldn't be here.”
THE WORD SHOWS“But the LORD was with Joseph...”
THE CIRCUMSTANCE SAYS“If obedience were worth it, this would have turned out better.”
THE WORD SHOWSJoseph obeyed God even when obedience cost him.
THE CIRCUMSTANCE SAYS“Being forgotten means nothing is happening.”
THE WORD SHOWSBeing forgotten by people is not the same as being forgotten by God.
📖 Do not let an unfinished movement become the authority that interprets God’s character.

🌅 Final Movement - The Long View
What Joseph Could Not See Then
🎧 FINAL MOVEMENT The Long View Genesis 45:4-8; 50:20 KJV
“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good...” Genesis 50:20 KJV
📖 Looking Back Is Different from Living Through
Joseph does not say, “What you did was actually good.” He says, “Ye thought evil against me.” Joseph names evil as evil. And then he says, “But God meant it unto good.”
Biblical trust does not require us to rewrite pain into something pleasant. God’s goodness does not depend on pretending that what hurt us was good. Joseph’s brothers were responsible for what they intended. God was not defeated by it.
✦ You can name what was evil without denying that God is good.
💎 You do not need hindsight in order to trust God today.
✍️ Sit With It
Is there something painful in your story that you have felt pressure to call “good” simply because you believe God can redeem it?
What difference is there between saying “this was good” and saying “God is still good”?
Where are you still waiting for the long view?
If God never gives you the explanation you want, what truth about His character can still anchor your trust?

🎼 Bringing the Movements Together
THE PIT did not have the final word.
THE PLACE did not have the final word.
THE PRISON did not have the final word.
THE WAITING did not have the final word.
GOD DID.
Joseph’s story does not promise that every faithful person will receive Joseph’s earthly outcome. It reveals something greater: no circumstance, injustice, delay, or human intention can make God cease to be God.
🪑 Before the Lord

Release
What ending have you quietly decided you need in order for this season to have been worth it?
Can you entrust that outcome to God while still honestly asking Him for what you desire?

🙏 Closing Declaration
I do not have to understand what God is doing in order to trust who God is.
I can ask for the prison door to open and still be faithful while I wait.
I can name what was evil without denying that God is good.
I can obey without demanding an outcome.
I can trust His presence before I understand His purpose.
🙏 Closing Prayer
📖 Praying God’s Word - Genesis 39:21
Father,
Help me recognize Your presence when my circumstances make You feel far away. Give me integrity when no one is watching, courage when obedience costs me, faithfulness when I am waiting, and humility when doors open.
Keep me from measuring Your goodness by what I can presently see. Where I have confused a difficult outcome with Your absence, bring me back to Your Word. Where I have tried to control the ending, teach me to take the next faithful step and entrust the result to You.
Teach me to trust You in the middle, before I know how the story ends.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“But the LORD was with Joseph...” Genesis 39:21 KJV
